American Bandito Pop-Culture Roadshow for Nov 15, 2019

This is another one of the pop-culture roadshow episodes where I go over some of the stuff that I've collected and talked a little bit about them and see if I can't learn something.

Archie Bunker's Grandson Joey Stivic Doll

This is a weird thing from the 70s, Archie Bunker's grandson Joey Stivic. It's a doll, it's a baby doll. Archie Bunker had a grandson its name was Joey Stivic and to capitalize on that the toy company thought, “how do we make toys for kids to buy for Archie Bunker? The show that all kids hate.”

The toy touts itself as a drink and wet doll and is a physically correct male. And they weren't kidding. The doll is in the package with plastic over its head which is kind of disturbing to me.

It came with diapers a bib and a bottle. You basically fill the bottle with water put it in its mouth and then that water would trickle down into the diapers and then it'd be like it wet itself. Aww, adorable.

This toy was by the toy company Ideal which is no longer around. One of the other things they did that was also very popular was the Betsy Wetsy doll. So it looks like they just basically took the idea of the Betsy Wetsy and made a male version.

The last thing that they ever made was the Rubik's Cube and then they went out of business even though it was a huge hit! Like why would they go out of business after that? But apparently, they did.

Super Grover 2.0

So this is one of the newer versions of Super Grover. There was a weird time where they started making dolls that were - you couldn't do anything with them they were just like stiff and they were more like statutes rather than toys and they would talk.

This one also had motion sensors so if you press the button and fly it through the air it responds like it’s flying.

So if you lift it up it goes "Going up". And if you swoop down it goes "Going down".

The character of Super Grover was introduced in the 70s. It was proposed by one of the writers for Sesame Street who was also a costume designer or something like that for another children's program. He took one of the props from that show and slapped it on the head of the Grover and said let's make him a superhero.

Not too long ago NASA actually took super Grover’s cape with them up into space and when they came back went on Sesame Street and gave it back to him and said your cape is now been in space.

A collage of Talking View-Masters and projectors

Talking View-Masters

I don't know why I keep getting view masters. View-masters themselves I think they're neat, I've got tons of these things sitting around they're fine. They're fun. One day I saw one of the old projectors for them the ones that talked.

So I get them, I try them out, they never work! This is why I need to stop getting these.

The talking view-masters were introduced in like 1970 and oddly enough they had a bunch of Sesame Street and Muppet ones. A lot of themed ones came with their own stylized players.

So that's all that I got. Talk to you later.

A quick peek behind-the-scenes of a new webcomic series. Coming soon!

I've recently paused my usual diary comic to dedicate my attention to an exciting new project—a fiction webcomic series featuring two characters that may be familiar to my long-time followers.  These characters, Bobert and the Monster have made appearances on my website before , and now they're taking center stage.  I'm working diligently with the hope of launching the series shortly.  In the meantime, I'd like to share this behind-the-scenes video of the drawing process for one of the upcoming pages.  Stay tuned for more updates as I bring this creative vision to life.

Working on a new comic

Drawing tablet screenshot I've been working on a new comic book idea. These are some screenshots of a few panels of a comic I'm drawing on my tablet. It's actually based on some characters I've had for a while called Bobert and the Monster . I don't even really remember how I came up with these characters themselves but the concept is:  It's a world made of monsters and humans are the ones that haunt and terrorize them. Specifically, Bobert the human haunts and plays tricks on the main character who is just called "Monster".  When I first started drawing them years ago they were just one-page gag comic strips. I was inspired to draw these characters based on those in-between comic stories I read in those old Gold Key and Dell comics from the 60s and 70s. Those comics would feature a main character like Yogi Bear or Huckleberry Hound . Then there were random one-page stories with a different character in the book to fill it out.  I had drawn a few o

Can I Buy And Resell Copies Of My Own Book From Amazon KDP?

There are two questions that I get asked about publishing my webcomic books on Amazon KDP . 1 - Can I Order A Print Copy Of My Own Book From Amazon KDP? When I started printing on Amazon KDP I also had that question. The reason I put the books together is I was just kind of doing it for myself. I could make a paperback version of my webcomic books and then I and my family could get a copy. It didn't even occur to me that I could actually start selling the book in public.  I thought it was just print-on-demand and then maybe I could order one.  But when I print a book on Amazon KDP I can also get up to 999 copies and sell it on my own!  I was able to get my own copies from Amazon KDP sent to me.  As the author, I can get them at printing cost . So they're at a discounted price. The option to order author copies is right in the KDP publishing setup.  The button is next to the book in KDP. 👇 The other question I get about publishing my book on Amazon KDP... 2 - Can I Sell My A

How I use one Gmail address for multiple Soundcloud accounts

Do you know the Gmail "+" trick to use one email for multiple accounts on one service? Here's a little trick I use that works for any service.  I talked about this on the podcast episode I did with artist Mortimur K . In this case, let's say I used up all the uploads I have for my free Soundcloud account . With this trick, I can open a new free account and use the same Gmail address. I don't want to create another Gmail account to sign up again.  Using my one Gmail address for multiple accounts on the same service I don't remember when I learned this but you can alter the name on a Gmail address. Like, let's say mine is "tom@gmail.com". To be clear that is not my email. I wish it was, but this is just a short example. Start with the original Gmail address Add a "+" after the email name Where it says "tom" on the address I can put a "+" after that. Add a "+" after the email name After that "+" I ca
