Talking shop.

Hopefully, we'll be able to hang out together in real life sometime.

What to do about my train?

One of the construction guys was there and said "It's getting there" I didn't really have a response.

Posting.

Posting things is kind of my zen thinking time.

Why does it think I only need these as news alerts?

Aww man! This big TMNT sold - Tom Ray's Day 210226

Sometimes the things I buy to sell online I wish I could keep. This large Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle is one of them. Plus, at the end of the video, I draw my daily autobiographical webcomic. This is a video of my daily life since I decided to sell collectibles and pop-culture items I collect on eBay to help support my art career instead of taking on freelance work. Turns out it was a muscle on my right shoulder blade causing it.

Turning vacation artwork into books? - Raheem Nelson

In this clip from the podcast, iPad illustrator Raheem Nelson talks about making travel journals and children's book artwork. From the interview: It's been maybe a few years gap between my last book which was about travel paintings and the next. I took this amazing trip to Europe, my first trip to Europe actually. I started in London and then I went to Paris, Barcelona, and then on the tail end Portugal. So I've got all these photos I've taken and paintings that I made while I was there. I wanted to make more paintings and just kind of compile it into a book and then do journal entries for it too.  Do you add written stuff next to it? How do you lay it out how do you plan it?  So how I plan it is it always starts with the photo reference and then from there I go back to look at anything I wrote while I was there. I usually journal when I go to different places just to record everything. Then the photos go along with that I'm using the photo reference to create. I&#

How I came up with the name of my band Lorenzo's Music? Clip from Tha Bloc Report Podcast

How we came up with our band name Lorenzo's Music? In this clip from an interview I did on Tha Bloc Report Podcast , I answer the question everyone always asks about my band Lorenzo's Music ...  Q: Where did the band name come from? Because I'm thinking Lorenzo Music. And then I'm thinking, Garfield. Yes, you are actually correct! That's where it came from.  And then the apostrophe "S" was added because we were afraid of getting sued so it was to confuse people. And what people used to think is it was like the movie Lorenzo's Oil. But it's been so long now, and more people are farther away from that movie that we don't get that reference as much anymore. People are starting to figure out the Garfield connection again.  So the story of how we came up with our band name? Essentially what happened was, I came home one night when our drummer Rob and I first got the idea for the band it was back when Nick at Nite used to actually play much old

Hidden message.

One of the reasons I get these books is because of the illustrations so I love when I learn things about them.

I don't know why I let them pile up like that these days.

Need time for life and art projects? What this artist does.

In this clip from the art podcast, fantasy illustrator Neal Tse talks about using a Kanban method to manage his time between life and art projects. You can check out the full episode here -  Neal Tse: Fantasy Illustrator - Tom Ray's Art Podcast What are some of the things that you're in the process of doing artistically these days? I always have a huge backlog of project ideas so just coming out of project management mindset I use MeisterTask which is a kanban board setup. That's where you have your backlog and then you have currently working on, and then complete.  So you take the task and kind of move it across those different columns. It's a way to stay focused.  Any time I have a random idea for a project I'll throw it in the backlog and after each project, I kind of reassess what my priorities are going to be. Constantly reprioritizing that stack just based on what the current needs are like if it's a client commission the deadline is coming up or I rea

Old cereal box backs.

I just got them because I thought the artwork looked cool.

No change.

The upside is still that I'm not paying for it during construction. But I'm not using it anyway, I just look at it.

How Artist Shannon Wang found inspiration from the Sktchy app

In this clip from the podcast, illustrator Shannon Wang talks about how she found inspiration over the past year using the Sktchy app. You can check out the full episode here - Shannon Wang: Illustrator, Painter and Tattoos Tom Ray's Art Podcast So you draw portraits do you have people that you actually model them for are you making them up in your head? There's an app called Sktchy that I found pretty close to the shutdown.  It's an app, you can post pictures of your artwork, you can also post pictures of yourself to be drawn by other artists. It's more about portraits than it is anything else on there and that was always something that I had a hard time with.  They offer classes to learn how to draw. You could take a whole class on learning how to draw an ear or nose or eyes or whichever! So I just kind of went all-in on that on quarantine and was just drawing and drawing and drawing and drawing.  If you look at my pictures kind of pre-March last year, March 2020, y

I found the 3rd Flash animated cartoon I made years ago - Tom Ray's Day 210309

I found a bunch of folders on a disc of old Flash-animated cartoons that I did like over ten years ago. This is the third one I made. This cartoon was called Lorenzo's Mutation and it was hand-drawn and inked then scanned into flash to film it. It also was going to include music by my band Lorenzo's Music . I was going to make a whole weekly series out of it and each episode would unfold in 30-second releases. But for some reason, this is the only one I ever made and never even released it! In this video, I watch the video and go through the original flash animation software files to look at how I made it. Plus, at the end of the video, my daily autobiographical webcomic . Now it's like where did they go? Why did they leave?

I didn't invent video streaming, what do I know?

Some Flash animation tricks I learned from my first music video

I found a bunch of folders on one of my external hard drives of old animations that I did like over 10 years ago. Previously I watched the first one that I made here . This time I want to talk about the second one that I did . I was reading more animation books and stuff during this time trying to teach myself animation. For this one, I got a little bit more ambitious.  Suddenly I was trying to make like a huge production for this one!  I not only had a song that I was working on with my band Lorenzo's Music that I wanted to use for this but I decided I wanted to try and make this cartoon idea a series.  So this was the intro cartoon of this series, it was a music video.  I didn't even really have a storyline! All I had was an idea but I started making it anyway. I made some characters, I had a concept and I assumed that basically, I would figure it out as I went along. At the time I was really into the animated series Batman Beyond so a lot of the styles in this are trying t
